CHANDIGARH: UT police are looking into bank statements of disgraced IPS officer Saji Mohan from during his tenure here as Narcotics Control Bureau zonal director, as part of its investigation of the embezzlement case against him. Sources in economic offences wing (EOW) told TOI that Saji Mohan had bought a Honda Civic car from Lally Prestige Honda Motors on January 1 with a downpayment of Rs 4.32 lakh and a loan of approximately Rs 8 lakh from the State Bank of India branch at Punjab Engineering College.
Cops suspect that he used embezzled money for this purchase.
He has been accused of embezzling Rs 13.81 lakh of evidence room money, which he was supposed to deposit in account number ZD-3053567367 of SBI on December 24, 2008. The present balance in the said account is Rs 3.95 lakh, said sources. They added that Saji was not able to provide convincing answers about the flow of money from his salary account (3053567367), which was also with SBI.
Bank documents with TOI reveal that Saji had deposited Rs 1.55 lakh in his account on December 29. On December 30, two deposits of Rs 1.65 lakh and Rs 2 lakh respectively were made in that account.
They said Saji had also purchased an LCD screen television, refrigerator and air conditioner from a Sector-17 shop through payment of Rs 90,000 on December 26.
The bill for the electronic goods has his name as Dr S Mohan and his Cochin address is mentioned on it, they added.
Saji���s account was frozen after Mumbai Anti-Terror Squad arrested him. Sources said the last transaction in it was made on January 15 with the balance being Rs 41,370. It is learnt that Saji had also purchased furniture during the last days of his stay in Chandigarh.
